Adjustments

Spinal joints that are not working properly can affect your health by irritating nearby nerve tissue. Chiropractic adjustments add motion to these areas, which helps restore the integrity of the nervous system and can improve the healing process.

Chiropractic adjustments are not only specific, but they are targeted and focused as well.

Q: Will adjustments make my spine too loose?
No! Only spinal joints that are "locked up" will be adjusted by your chiropractor. This allows the weaker muscles and ligaments to stabilize and heal.

Q: Can’t I just adjust myself?
No! Some patients report that they hear their joints "pop" or "crack" on their own, however this is not a proper adjustment. Those noises you hear are the joints that are already moving too much so it is important not to force an "adjustment" on your own! Even chiropractors must have another doctor of chiropractic adjust them.

Adjustments help reduce nervous system interferences and "reconnect" the communication link between your brain and body.

Adjusting techniques differ between each patient. Approaches are modified to suit the needs of each individual patient.

Adjustments are safe and use the least amount of force necessary to get fixated, or "stuck" joints moving again.

Each adjustment builds on the one before, that is why it is important to keep your appointments and follow through on your chiropractor's suggestions.

Headaches

They may be common, but they are not normal.

The agony of having a headache leads most people to believe that a quick fix is the best answer. This has produced a huge market for medications, which only cover up the symptoms instead of getting to the cause of the problem. Powerful drugs can actually numb your nervous system so the pain you are feeling does not register. Yes, popping a painkiller is the most convenient approach, but it can cause adverse effects and even kidney and liver damage. I bet you don’t hear about that when these harmful products are recommended. And furthermore, they don’t even get to the cause of the headache.

A cause of headaches can be from the spinal bones in the neck that aren’t supporting your head properly. If they are not moving correctly, this can affect nerves, muscles, and even the blood supply to your head.

Headaches can be related to vision problems and other causes. Our examinations can show if you are likely to be helped by chiropractic treatment.

Just as the foundation affects a building, headaches and neck pain can be caused by problems in the pelvis or lower back.

Many headaches are the result of a loss of curve in the neck, affecting the nerves, muscles and blood supply.

Q: What causes headaches?
Most common causes are physical trauma, emotional stress, nutritional deficiencies or chemical toxins. Sometimes there may be a combination of these and other factors. An examination process helps identify the most likely cause.

Q: What if I don’t have a headache when I come in?
Chiropractic is not an aspirin!! Repeated visits, even when you are feeling better, can help retrain and strengthen the muscles that support your spine. Just as it takes more than one or two workouts at the gym to get in shape, it obviously takes time for your body to heal.

Q: How long will it take before I start to feel better?
Some patients experience results rather quickly. Others notice a slow decline in their symptoms after several weeks or longer of chiropractic care. It is impossible to predict. If you’ve had chronic headaches for many years, improvement can take time.

Back Pain

Pain is considered a warning sign, just like the sound of a fire alarm. Every ache or pain has a cause. Some people choose to cover up the pain instead of finding the cause and correcting it. Doesn’t it make sense to correct the cause instead of treating the symptom?

A common cause of back pain is the nerve-rich facet joints on the back side of each spinal bone. If these pairs of interlocking "fingers" aren’t moving right they can cause very painful symptoms.

The discs between the spinal bones can be a source of back pain too. These rings of fibrous tissues act as spacers, connectors, and "shock absorbers" for the spine. Trauma can cause the soft, pulpy material in the middle to bulge or herniate, putting extreme pressure on the delicate nearby nerves.

Besides being dangerous and only providing temporary results, more than half of all back surgeries are considered failures.

While over extension can cause back pain to flare-up, the underlying problem may have gone undetected for years. Ironically, many insurance companies would rather pay for extensive surgery than conservative chiropractic care.

Once you know the cause, you have several choices. One approach is bed rest. However, research shows that prolonged bed rest can actually delay recovery and make the problem worse!

Physical therapy is another option. But exercising spinal joints that aren’t working right is like continuing to drive your car with misaligned tires. Another choice is to numb or cover up the pain with drugs. While drugs can offer temporary relief, they can’t correct functional problems of affected spinal joints.

The most drastic measure is surgery. A laminectomy cuts off the offending facet joints leaving the spinal cord exposed! A spinal fusion cuts out the disc tissue and immobilizes the joint. While there may be times when surgery makes sense, it is expensive, risky and more than half of all back surgeries fail!

More and more people are choosing chiropractic care first. Specific chiropractic adjustments can help improve spinal function. Better yet, chiropractic is safe as well as natural! And chiropractic looks to correct the underlying cause of the problem.

Q: What if my insurance won’t pay for chiropractic care?
Insurance companies make two mistakes by limiting or denying coverage. First, they ignore current research showing the superiority of chiropractic care in these types of cases. Plus, they overlook the lower cost and higher patient satisfaction enjoyed with chiropractic care. We offer ways to make chiropractic care affordable for just about anyone.

Q: How long does it take for chiropractic to work?
Patient’s results vary depending upon many factors. How long have you had your problem? Do you keep your appointments? Are you getting the proper rest, exercise and nutrition? Are you in otherwise good health? Within a short period of time most patients sense enough progress to justify completing our recommendations.

Q: Will I need chiropractic care forever?
After patients get the relief they want, many choose to continue with some type of periodic care. These chiropractic "check ups" can help support the final stages of healing and help detect and resolve new problems before they become serious. How long you want to receive chiropractic care is up to you.
Chiropractic is a team approach to better health. As you enjoy results, tell those you love! Explain how millions enjoy relief and better health by restoring the integrity of their spine and nervous system with safe and natural chiropractic care!

Neck Pain

Your neck is the most vulnerable part of your spine. Not only does it support your 10 to 12 pound head, maintain a gentle forward curve, and permit head rotation, but it must also allow the free flow of nerve impulses to the head, face, hands and rest of your body. Besides discomfort and annoyance, chronic neck pain is a sign that something is wrong.

Improper telephone use is but one of many causes of neck pain. A thorough examination can reveal its likely cause or causes and suggest the best approach for optimum results.

Many everyday things can cause neck pain, such as watching TV, using your computer, reading a book or falling asleep in a chair or on an airplane. The temporary pain that results can resolve on its own, especially when the offending activity is discontinued.

When it doesn’t, a more serious underlying problem may be indicated.

Your cervical spine (neck), consists of seven small interlocking bones. Neck pain can be associated with a loss of forward curve.

A thorough examination can determine if you are a good candidate for chiropractic care. These tests may involve your ability to turn and bend. Muscle tone of the supporting muscles in the neck may be tested. Diagnostic imaging to reveal the underlying structure of the spine may be requested. These and other tests are designed to identify the cause and location of your neck pain.

The most common cause of neck pain is functional distortions in the spine resulting from vertebral subluxations. These subluxations are seen in cases of reverse cervical curve, whiplash and joint instability. The body responds by tightening muscles in the neck, "splinting" the joint to protect it from further insult. Chiropractic care can help!

Most of the pain-sensing nerves in the neck are located in the pairs of facet joints on the back side of each vertebra. These smooth, interlocking surfaces allow you to rotate your head and bend your head up and down. If these joints become locked or fixated, neck pain can result. Chiropractic care can help restore proper joint motion.

A more difficult problem to correct is the degenerative changes that result from neglect. Years of uncorrected spinal problems can cause bone spurs, disc thinning and other forms of spinal decay. These types of problems respond more slowly, and some type of on-going supportive chiropractic care may be necessary.

Our response to stress is another common cause of neck pain. Deadlines. Rush-hour traffic. Overcommitments. Work pressures. Family obligations, etc

Ever meet someone who was a "pain in the neck?" Each of us is susceptible to our body’s unconscious response to people and circumstances. These perceptions can show up as episodes of neck pain.

If the weakest link in our bodies is our neck, stress shows up there. While chiropractic care cannot reduce the stress of your bust life, it can help improve your ability to handle and tolerate it. Without drugs or surgery!

Like a turtle that retracts its head in stressful situations, many people with neck pain attempt to protect their neck by involving their shoulders.

Q: Why did the chiropractor take pictures of my lower back?
Many patients are surprised when their chiropractic examination involves other areas of their body besides the local site of their symptom(s). Some neck pain cases can be a compensation to problems in the feet, knees, hips and lower back. Your chiropractor sees you as a whole person, not just a collection of "parts."

Q: Will I have to have neck adjustments?
If your problem is the result of abnormal motion or position of spinal bones in the neck, cervical adjustments can be effective. There are many ways to adjust the neck, and your chiropractor has become an experienced master. Years of practice make these spinal adjustments safe and effective. Much safer than common aspirin or muscle relaxers!

Q: How long will I need chiropractic care?
Some patients see quick improvement and then immediately discontinue their care. They often suffer a relapse since muscles and soft tissue have not had time to fully heal. Others discover that degenerative changes to their spines make periodic checkups a worthwhile investment. We’ll make recommendations, but how long you benefit from chiropractic care is up to you.
